Synopsis The tutorial is about setting up a lab environment based on the workshops that are delivered by APNIC. The focus of the tutorial is to examine the elements involved in installing, and automating a Standard Operating System (SOE) and an understanding and familiarity with the operations. This tutorial aims at providing attendees a practical approach to:

  • Scripting concepts.
  • Downloading scripts from online repositories.
  • Auditing scripts before running.
  • The process to start a lab for a particular workshop.
  • Scaling the setup.

Target Audience

  • Engineers, Network Managers and Operators, and Security policy makers who are interested in creating a lab environment to build skills in various technologies for further learning.


  • It is assumed that participants have a basic understanding of network operations, Linux command line interface, and basic scripting.

Other requirements

  • Participants are advised to bring their own laptop computers with high-speed Wi-Fi (802.11a/g/n/ac) and administrative access to system. It is also recommended that laptops have Intel i5 or i7 processor, >=8GB of RAM and 30GB of free hard disk space.
  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS virtual machine running in a hypervisor that supports nested virtualisation. https://releases.ubuntu.com/18.04.5 or https://www.osboxes.org/ubuntu/
  • Cisco router images will need to be provided by the attendee
